During the nineteenth century, all aspects of European culture were affected by the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the advances made by science, as well as social improvement and
political progress.1 From this environment, Positivism emerged as a cultural trend, which was expressed as naturalism in literature and as impressionism in painting, as both of these movements can be
seen as belonging to the Positivist cultural movement.2 The following examination focuses on how several works of nineteenth century art reflected the concepts associated with modernity. By examining these works
of art, it is possible to gain insight into the multiple ways in which nineteenth century European culture was changing, as it adjusted to industrialization and a new age.
There were innovations in art, both in the production of artists materials and in their usage that greatly affected the modern styles of painting that emerged during this era.3
For example, science and technology created materials and pigments that greatly extended the range of color that was available to an artist.4 While modernity was certainly expressed through the use
of these new pigments and equipment, as well as in the new choices of subject matter that were made by Realist and Impressionist artists, Anthea Callen asserts that the focus
of modernity in nineteenth century art is best found in these artists "differences in observing and experiencing the visible world" and that the innovations of pigment and material simply provided
