spy is from the James Bond films, but the movies dont reflect reality. This paper looks at espionage today, and why it has to be done. Discussion Espionage
is "the practice of obtaining secrets (spying) from rivals or enemies for military, political, or economic advantage ... The definition has been restricted to a state spying on potential or
actual enemies, primarily for military purposes..." (Espionage, 2005). Many nations also spy routinely on "both their enemies and allies, although they maintain a policy of not making comment
on this" (Espionage, 2005). Finally, "Blacks Law Dictionary (1990) defines espionage as: ... gathering, transmitting, or losing ... information related to the national defense" (Espionage, 2005). The "national
defense" is paramount to almost all governments, and certainly since 9/11 has greatly concerned the United States in particular. Terminology: If the agent who undertakes espionage is a
member of the armed forces, he may be termed an "intelligence officer" instead of a spy (Espionage, 2005). Its generally admitted that spying is distasteful work, as well as
being risky. So why is it necessary at all? First of all, the world is a risky place, a lesson that was driven home with terrible clarity
on 9/11. This is not the place to debate the reasons for the attack, nor for castigating the intelligence community for its failure to predict it; rather its simply
to make a statement of fact: in a world as driven by ideologies as ours, hatred is a very real problem, and can potentially motivate acts like September 11.
