While PC gaming began as an innocuous kind of leisure activity generally focused on by computer geeks and adolescents, the current gaming industry has targeted almost every demographic group, from very young children through adulthood. The problem with this industry, though, is that the PC gaming systems are becoming more interactive, the graphics more realistic leading to potential ethical and social implications of the increasing access to violent and addictive video games. The Background The background of the PC gaming industry goes back to the first personal computers that integrated simple games that corresponded with first generation computer games, including Atari. These simple games were the first step in the development of complex computer gaming systems that currently incorporate real-time computer gaming activities. The PC gaming industry currently integrates a variety of game methodologies, including browser games, play-by-email games, and games that allow for multiple players in real-time role-playing games. Competitive multiplayer games like Counter-Strike and Halo are so popular that millions of players log-in and play the games every day (Oser, 2005). The focus of the PC gaming industry currently views on-line gaming as a means of generating income and fostering interactive game play in a variety of demographic groups. Players in the 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s are on-line playing these interactive games. Surprisingly, the average age of the PC game player in the modern era is between 28-34 years of age (Oser, 2005). While men comprise are large portion of the computer gaming demographics for games like Halo and Counterstrike, women now top men in PC gaming players, primarily, research suggests, because of their prevalence in on-line gambling (Oser, 2005).
