not mean that our form of government has always offered equal freedoms to all people. Nor does it mean that there are not problems that haunt the system. The following
paper examines the birth of American democracy and the development of that democracy as it involves freedoms. Modern American Democracy Many argue that modern democracy is and was
Americas gift to the world. The struggles of America to be free from Britain were powerful struggles that were primarily based on freedoms. The freedoms were, for the most part,
focused at first on religion. The colonists wanted the freedom to practice their religion without interference from Britain. The freedoms gradually moved into a more political realm where America wanted
to make their own choices free from any European control. These simple beginnings proved to be a very powerful beginning as the forefathers put down in writing how all men
were created equal and had equal freedoms. And, interestingly enough, the forefathers put together documents which would allow for evolution. In addition, these men made sure that one of the
most powerful truths possessed in the papers involved the power of the people over government, not the other way around. The people were given the power to control the land
and if they were not happy with the political leaders they could do something about it. This all sounds incredibly powerful and incredibly positive. But, at the same time
these "truths" did not apply to women nor did they apply to any man who was not white. These freedoms were, and still are in many ways, very limited. Free
white men were the only people who could vote and the only people who could make a difference or fight against a system. All other people, people not even really
