the themes. It is a tale that illustrates the determined, obsessive, actions of one man as narrated by another. The narrator in this story often serves as the stable and somewhat unbiased witness to the events that unfold. He is, in many ways, the voice of reason and a lens through which we can see the events unfold. Ishmael, this narrator, is the one man to really survive the ordeal that passes, perhaps because he is a relatively good man who sees beyond the obsession and the need for power or control. With that in mind the following paper takes one passage from Chapter 87 of Melvilles book and illustrates how it relates to the story as a whole. In this passage we see Ishmael as a man who, as mentioned, is capable of looking beyond selfish intent and obsession and sees the beauty of nature, perhaps demonstrating his humility and thus making him a survivor. Chapter 87 The passage to be discussed is as follows: "And thus, though surrounded by circle upon circle of consternations and affrights, did these inscrutable creatures at the centre freely and fearlessly indulge in all peaceful concernments; yes, serenely revelled in dalliance and delight. But even so, amid the tornadoed Atlantic of my being, do I myself still for ever centrally disport in mute calm; and while ponderous planets of unwaning woe revolve round me, deep down and deep inland there I still bathe me in eternal mildness of joy" (Melville). In this excerpt Ishmael has just witnessed an understanding of what is going on in the depths of the sea, with the whales demonstrating love and nurturing behavior.
