resources to children in developing countries with facial deformities caused by cleft lips and cleft palates. Facial deformities and clefts can lead to speech and eating problems, and children born
with clefts are often not allowed to attend school. More to the point, thousands of newborns and children are abandoned every year because parents feel their children are cursed by
God. The importance of cosmetic surgery in these countries is that it saves lives. And yet cleft lip is often simple to treat.
SmileTrain (2010) states that the surgery takes just forty five minutes and costs as little as $250US. Dubner & Levitt (2008) of The New York Times backs them up, stating
that SmileTrain is one of the best philanthropic organizations for spending donations on services. Their philanthropic work has already received good publicity, but there is so much done when the
doctors believe that clefts and the problems associated with them can be eradicated. For this reason, a more concerted awareness program must not apply only to agencies and services that
help the children directly, but also to businesses whose donations can better assure that childrens lives are spared. Background
