things are changing. A warning to those who think that e-commerce is the be all and end all of business is provided by Pain. He says that organizations should not
forget their roots or the fundamental ABC commerce that they had once practiced successfully (2001). What e-commerce has changed about business is that it can be done quickly, at
the click of a mouse (2001). Physical distance had been rendered irrelevant (2001). Some wonder what is next. The author contends that the next stop on the technology train is
in fact m-commerce, or mobile commerce. In some way, it is ironic that m-commerce becomes important after e-commerce has rendered distance irrelevant. The truth is that distance is relevant.
Most people do not stay home and are not chained to their desks. In fact, in many major companies over the decades it has become increasingly popular to give management
walkie-talkies and in other companies hand executives cell phones. Either way, it proves that distance has meaning. While the Internet allows for people to communicate all over the world
it is perhaps not as useful if it is not portable which is where m-commerce comes in. But there are negative aspects to m-commerce, which are perhaps just obstacles. Nevertheless,
the availability of bandwidth and hardware platforms may be problematic (Pain, 2001). However, much headway has been made with such things as Onstar and increasing availability of cellular calling areas.
Palm Pilots have also revolutionized the area and one would think that as technology advances problems would be resolved. Soon the Internet will be available all the time, anywhere. It
