but in a very complex manner that is often confusing. With that in mind the following paper provides a brief summary of the novel in order to assist the student
with a better understanding of the various story lines. Red Sorghum The first thing that is perhaps important to note is that there is one narrator who keeps
all the intertwining stories together. The narrator is a young man from the various provinces involved in the novel. It is also a novel about the people of China during
and after WWII. One story tells us of how Yu Zhanaos simple and perhaps unorganized militia actually achieved some success through a suicide attack in WWII. This tale is intertwined
with the story of Yu. It sets the stage for understanding the time period and the people during Yus time as we see him engage in violent acts. Yu first
rescued, and then raped a young woman, in a sorghum field. He then later married this noble and heroic woman. And, then we note that her life is destined to
end as she dies in enemy gunfire during one of Yus ambushes. This is essentially one book, or one aspect of the entire novel. Another segment of the novel presents
us with a red sorghum field. This section presents the readers with a look at the region prior to the war. It is a story of a young couple who
take over the red sorghum field and the winery before the war and before all chaos was set loose upon this region. With the third part of the novel
we have orphaned children. These children are fighting for the lives We see them fighting against a pack of hundreds of wild dogs. Interestingly enough these dogs are seen as
