communist rule. While Yans work is fictional, reports from China show that the political corruption that forms the key plot element in the novel is all-too real. If anything, in
the ensuing decade since Yan wrote his novel, the entrenched corruption that Yan displays so graphically has worsened. In some areas the
rule of law no longer appears to apply, but rather justice is a commodity that can be bought and traded. China has been struggling toward a new future that incorporates
private enterprise and many aspects of capitalism into their economy. Whether or not China becomes a viable economic force in the twenty-first century may largely depend on whether or not,
the widespread corruption pictured in Yans novel can be brought under control. The plot of The Garlic Ballads is an intricately crafted tale of love and loyalty.
As it unfolds the Western reader is presented with a view of life in Communist China that is both haunting and compelling. The specific setting for this realistic tale of
brutality is? ironically? Paradise County, which is a unforgiving environment. From the beginning of the novel, the circumstances mirror the real political situation in China.
In the novel, the local peasant farmers have been ordered by the country officials to plan only one crop?garlic. Yet, after stuffing their own pockets with
government fees and taxes, these same officials refuse to buy the crop saying that the warehouse is full. It soon becomes very clear that Paradise County is a land full
