in a spooky amusement park. This paper discusses the stages of human growth from an "animal," to a 10-year old to a person of intuitive spiritual awareness. Discussion The plot
of the film is relatively simple: 10-year old Chihiro and her parents are driving to their new home, when her father takes a "short cut" that leads them to what
appears to be a deserted theme park. There, Chihiro is warned to leave before its too late, but her parents are seduced by the delicious smells of food and begin
eating, subsequently turning into swine. Chihiro finds herself in a world populated by spirits, and gets a job at a bathhouse as she tries to find a way to rescue
them. She finally does, and the three resume their journey, though Chihiro is the only one of them who remembers the spirit world. When Chihiro and her parents enter the
spirit world, the latter are quickly transformed into animals in the literal sense: they eat gluttonously, and so are transformed into hogs. Chihiro herself, though avoiding that fate, is introduced
to viewers as she lies complaining on the back seat of the car, a child concerned only with herself and her comforts, thus showing that her concerns are animalistic as
well. From this beginning, she grows into a person of worth and awareness. Miyazaki gets Chihiros parents out of the way quite early in the film so that the audience
has the opportunity to watch as this selfish little girl comes to the realization that she is alone, and has to solve her own problems, something that has never happened
before in her life. Miyazaki fans "revel in Chihiros little-girl-lost dilemma, anxious to see what kind of fantastical characters and creatures the master storyteller will populate his new world with"
