cytoplasm. The activities that occur within mitochondria begin with two sets of membranes comprised of both a smooth exterior and a tubular inner membrane that establish plate-like double membranes
called cristae. What makes the mitochrondria the primary energy source of the cell is the cytochrome enzymes of terminal electron transport, along with
the critical enzymes of the citric acid cycle, fatty acid oxidation, and oxidative phosphorylation. This process helps the mitochondria transform nutrients into much needed energy while also accomplishing a
number of other specific tasks. There is no difference in origin of mitochondrial chromosome when addressing that of a male or female for the reason that the mother is
the sole source of such genetic inheritance. The issue of mitochondrial manipulation has come to a head most recently with the debate over human cloning. This aspect, in and
of itself, triggers many new questions: Where does one draw the line at cloning? Why would it be deemed ethically acceptable to consider human embryo research for "the development
of treatment for mitochondrial diseases and for diseased or damaged tissues or organs" (Mayor 8) and yet human embryo cloning is banned? Looking at the speed with which this
technology is advancing, consideration in this field will need to move quickly. When considering the issues that surround the activity of mitochondria, one can readily acknowledge both the potential
benefits and drawbacks of such a procedure; however, only if this activity is not ineffectually disrupted in either form or function can the marvel of technological advancement truly assist in
