meeting of the American Institute of Biological Science (AIBS) in Arlington, Virginia, this year was, in fact, climate change and how it was going to affect such things as our
worlds food supply. Climate change, however, has the potential not just to affect our food supply, it has the potential to affect biodiversity the world over. Not surprisingly,
over the last few hundred years humans have managed to increase natural extinction rates by a factor of 1000 times (Xu, Tang, Liu, et. al., 2009). In
acknowledgment of this fact, the 2002 Convention on Biological Diversity pledged a significant reduction in biodiversity loss by the year 2010 (Xu, Tang, Liu, et. al., 2009). The
goal was significant enough, in fact, that it was later endorsed by the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development (Xu, Tang, Liu, et. al., 2009). Despite the
pledge to make significant changes, however, the rate at which we are experiencing radical changes in species distribution and even outright loss of species remains disturbing. Numerous environmental
changes that have been observed over time seem to suggest a serious disruption in the physical and chemical processes upon which the earths ecology is based. One of the
results of this is a change in biodiversity. Many speculate that these changes are related to the phenomena of global warming, the progressive change in climate that has been
noted over time. There has, of course, been significant controversy surrounding the theory of global warming. This controversy has reached an all-time high, in fact, in just the
last couple of weeks when documents were unearthed that seem to suggest that key scientists were intentionally manipulating data and their interpretation of it to support the theory of global
