domestic waste, to industrial waste. While there can be natural sources of water pollution, mans own activities result in the greatest impact to our water resources. In most
cases these impacts result from a combination of overdevelopment and inadequate regulation. These impacts threaten not just surface waters but also groundwaters. We must learn to minimize our
impacts to the natural world and to mitigate those unavoidable impacts if we are to stabilize our environment and preserve it for future generations. The intent of this paper
is to assess the environmental problem of water pollution, to delineate both the nonliving and living factors that contribute to it or are affected by it, and to suggest changes
that can be made to make our environment more sustainable. A sustainability plan will be proposed and its benefits and challenges outlined.
Detailed Description of the Problem Nonpoint pollutant sources are concerning because they are more easily overlooked. Nonpoint pollution occurs during rainfall
and snowmelts as well as from atmospheric deposits. Nonpoint sources can include everything from stormwater runoff from our every-increasing impervious surfaces, to septic tank leachate, to pollutant sources more
often associated with air pollution such as chloroflurocarbons from aerosol cans and sulfuric acid from industrial and urban discharges. Groundwater can be either directly or indirectly influenced by each
and it, in turn, can impact other water resources. Many times our impacts to water resources come in our need to modify the land to produce plant matter that is
