Stewart leaves her West Virginia prison she is back in her own home, on house arrest, but it is a rather easy stint. She is allowed to have parties as
long as she does not invite her new friends who may in fact be felons. It seems that the old parole system is a thing of the past. In fact,
many states have done away with parole all together (Seiter, 2002). For those that do have parole still, and also as it respects probation, there has been a tradition
in terms of thought (2002). It seems that many programs would opt to counsel ex-convicts (2002). However , in recent years, there is increased attention to surveillance
and managing risk (2002). In general, it is thought that parole officers had been assigned about 45 cases but today, the caseloads are more like 70 (Petersilia, 2000 as
cited in Seiter, 2002) . Problems with the parole system include the fact that many parolees end up back in prison (Seiter, 2002). It seems that to a great
extent, the parole system is breaking down. In many instances it does not work and case workers are seriously overloaded. This appears to be the case in areas that are
extremely populated. In certain venues, this is not the case but rather, there is greater attention paid to those released. It seems that the new trend away from attention to
rehabilitation has to do with the fact that the criminal justice system is strained. There are simply too many prisoners. It should be said that the probation or parole systems
