One company spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars to craft their mission statement (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000). They hired consultants to help and spent eighteen months designing the perfect mission statement for the company (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000). A huge public relations event took place with a video crew recording this event, which was the unveiling of the mission statement (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000). As the companys president concluded his speech, a huge 50 by 100 foot banner slowly unrolled; it read: "Our mission: To be the best in the gadget industry and put customers first" (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000, p. 23). Everyone in the audience, including employees, suppliers, and customers, applauded and everyone had a T-shirt and a button that read, "Live the mission" (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000, p. 23). A few weeks later, very late in the workday afternoon, salesman John received a call from his best customers, Bill (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000). Bill had a problem; he needed the company to overnight 210 units of a product (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000). John knew the rules regarding overnight shipments - no more than 200 units could be shipped overnight, but, even so, John remembered the mission statement of putting customers first and told the customer, no problem, he would have the units sent out overnight even though it was very shortly before the regular closing time (Bartkus, Glassman and McAfee, 2000).
