the people of the town see her as eccentric. Aside from her eccentricity she is a very sad and lonely woman who has been so controlled throughout her life that
she does not know reality as most people see it. As a result she ends up killing a supposed lover so that he will never leave her. She lives with
the dead mans body in her bed for many years, which is a condition that not only makes her eccentric but perhaps dangerous and certainly insane to some extent. This
particular situation leaves the reader wondering why she killed her lover, Homer. We never really know why and we are left with the question and all the possibilities that exist.
The following paper examines Emily and other fictional characters which help us understand the different aspects of the character of Emily. In doing so the paper also examines why she
may have killed Homer. Emily and Others In our first examination of a character that has similar qualities to Emily we look at the character of Eleanor in
the film "The Haunting." Eleanor is a young woman whose life has ultimately been controlled by her mother. "Nell (Lili Taylor), a withdrawn, impressionable woman who has spent most of
her life caring for her mother" (McCarthy 34). She has quite obviously had no life of her own. While we do not necessarily know the entire story, what we gather
is that the only thing she has in the world is the apartment she lives in, which will not be hers, and the car that once belonged to her mother.
