characters, that lead to tragedy or loss, from two separate stories: the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925) and Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton (1911). Plot device or
pattern of action? One way to examine these stories is to see if those same intentions fit with the characters other actions in a story, or to determine if the
author is using them to have something happen in the novel. Do the intentions of characters follow a pattern? Or does it seem as though this is the
only mistake that one of the major characters has made and now we see how they have to leave with that one tragic error? If the misguided intentions appear to
be a pattern of behavior for the character, the character appears more believable, just mired in their own poor choices. How a characters misguided intentions lead to tragedy or loss
Ethan Fromes self-directed and misguided intention starts the story with his marriage to Zenobia, (Zeena) his mothers nurse. He is grateful to the woman because she has taken care
of his mother during her long illness, however, he primarily, marries her because he does not want to be alone during the long New England winter. He rationalizes that
it will help both of them, since Zeena no longer has anywhere to go after his mother dies. In being afraid for his physical comfort, he has risked his
