The people expected their God to perform miracles and they did not question them. While Abraham and his wife were a bit surprised when she became pregnant as an elderly woman, God had told Abraham that it would happen so they did not question the event. When a word that holds a certain uplifting or divine meaning is used in common conversations, it loses its specialness. People say any number of things are miracles: its a miracle I got here on time, its a miracle that worked out as well as it did and so on. The word miracle has taken on the commonplace meaning to explain overcoming obstacles or even events of less importance. The Bible says that only God can perform miracles and that the miracle supersedes natural laws. Bakers Dictionary of the Bible says that a miracle is "an event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the simple volition of God" (Samons, 2012). Further, miracles show that the power behind it is not limited or constrained by natural laws. In fact, it interrupts natural laws. It is supernatural in its origin. In the New Testament, the Hebrew word for miracle can also be translated as sign so it is a sign that God uses to point to Himself as the power (Samons, 2012). Examples of miracles in the Old Testament include God parting the Red Sea for Moses and the Israelites. Other miracles of that time included the fall of Jericho and manna falling from the heavens when the Israelites were hungry. In the New Testament, Jesus performed many miracles, such as feeding 5,000 with just five loaves of break and two fish, healing the sick, walking on water, and raising Lazarus from the dead.
