a controversial book entitled The Awakening, in which she explored one womans acceptance of her sexuality to the point where the main character "freed herself" from her husband and pursued
an adulterous affair as she so desired. Men were outraged by Chopins story, as women of that era were expected to be obedient caregivers for their husbands and never
dare look beyond the realm of a conventional marriage. One of the last areas of sociopolitics to finally submit to the demands of the
twentieth centurys fierce womens liberation movement has been in jobs such as criminal justice. Women as police officers, probation and parole officers, criminal attorneys and judges were unheard of
only several short decades ago. In Chopins time, they were probably not even a remote thought. But now in the 1980s and 1990s stories fill the papers and
various periodical journals with the notable example is that of Vicki Miles-LaGrange and three other Black Women currently serving as U.S. Attorneys.
According to my research, Vicki Miles-LaGrange was listening to the debate on the floor of the Oklahoma State Senate in the summer of 1993 when one of her legislative
aides handed her a note telling her that U.S. Senator David Boren, a Democrat from Oklahoma, was holding on the telephone in her office and that he wanted to speak
with her right away. Miles-LaGrange, already a well-accomplished state senator, routinely talked to Boren and other members of the Oklahoma congressional delegation about issues affecting her district. While the call
may not have been out of the ordinary, what he had to say was. Shockingly, Boren asked Miles-LaGrange if she would like to become a U.S. attorney !
