Imagine then, how minorities struggle with the ability to be represented fully in society when one of the main forms of communication in our society does not fairly represent this group. This problem is significant in todays society and in order to promote change in this area, first a thorough understanding of the problem is necessary. Why Minorities Need their Own Media in Order to be Fully Represented in Society Proper media representation in the media is more important than ever before, namely because the culture of America has become more diverse than ever before (Rawls, 2003). "The media occupy a key site and perform a crucial role in the public representation of unequal social relations and the play of cultural power. It is in and through representations, for example, that members of the media audience are variously invited to construct a sense of who "we" are in relation to who "we" are not" (Cottle, 2000, p. 5). But, this diversity is not fully represented in the media, which of course is cause for serious concern (Rawls, 2003, See also Wilson and Gutierrez, 1995). "The cultural, economic and social gap between white and black lives in America is regarded by many sociologists and scholars as enormous--largely because most white people learn about African-American life through the media, particularly television" (Entman and Rojecki, 2001).
