that the minimalism in the art world enabled artists to express more than just what was bubbling on the surface politically. It was something that could permeate souls and relay
what was going on underneath the shell, something that was not conveyed by literature or journalism of the day. Chave says regarding that minimalists of the 1970s, that their "greatness...
lies solely in their power to let things be heard which ideology conceals" (Chave, 1990, p. 53). In other words, according to Chave
and other critics, the art of minimalism was an outlet for expression that was less limiting than words. Baker (1989) agrees with her assessment and in his book, says that
the movement essentially: " gave American art of the 1960s a philosophical vividness scarcely seen in art before or since" (p. 10). That
is sometimes difficult for the non-visual to fathom, but Chave and others seem to suggest that art went beyond ordinarily boundaries. While many embraced the notion that art in the
1960s and 1970s was profound, they were set apart from others who saw no such thing. Other critics however took a decidedly different view. For example, E.C. Goosen and Clement
Greenberg did not see the art as going beyond its own self-imposed boundaries. Rather, they saw things as simply art. In fact, E.C.
Goosens ideas about art were quite liberal. While, for example, most critics thought of Jan Yoors as more of a craftsman, Goosen described him as a master ("Tapestries," 2000). He
