Essay / Research Paper Abstract
6 pages in length. Just as people can look at something but not truly see it, they can – and often – hear without actually listening to what is being said, which reflects a tremendous casualty of an ever-faster and less attentive society. The blatant absence of this particular social grace and fundamental tenet of communication has synergistically imposed significant strain upon the way in which human beings have learned to pass information, express feelings and empower each other with words. The extent to which the level of mindful listening has all but disappeared in virtually every corner of contemporary society is both grand and far-reaching; that its singular presence is responsible for alleviating misunderstanding and cultivating a more holistic and healthful environment speaks to the importance of such a seemingly inconsequential factor of human communication. responsible for alleviating misunderstanding and cultivating a more holistic and healthful environment speaks to the importance of such a seemingly inconsequential factor of human communication. Nowhere is mindful listening more
important for enhancing interpersonal communication than within the workplace environment. Effective business communication is an essential component in todays commerce; without it, there can be little if any cohesion
among employees, management and consumers. In order to establish this basis of mindful listening within the workplace, employers have to abandon their supervisory egos in exchange for an atmosphere
of openness, encouragement and teamwork. For the most part, the concept of business communication - when implemented correctly - can be the difference between a productive organization and one
that cares little about its workforce. When communication from mindful listening is at its full potential, it can make the workplace a "model of teamwork" (Flynn, 1996, p. 16).
