of this technology must begin with the assumption of misuse and the possible implications. Brain Prosthetics - What is it and Who Will Benefit?
Foucaults Birth of a Clinic is a postmodern skeptical view of modernity (Foucault, 1975). He believed that modernity brought its own set of new myths
which were as unsoundly based as those which preceded the modern age (Foucault, 1975). For example, Foucault (1975) believed that one myth was that all doctors were wise.
He even coined the term "gaze" to depict this notion (Foucault, 1975). He believed that a myth had developed about doctors which said they had acquired a "gaze"
which allowed them to simply look at a patient and "know" all (Foucault, 1975). But Foucault (1975) did not believe this at all.
In another work, this author reveals his ideas about prisons, and how he believes they serve only to perpetuate crime due to how the prisoners are handled (Foucault,
1995). Through these two books, we see striking similarities to the possible repercussions of brain prosthetics (Foucault, 1995). Although clearly the subject matter is vastly different, the point
is that brain prosthetics could in fact result in the kind of oppression and control which Foucault (1995) addresses in both of his books.
