feeding tube has made headlines in America. Unfortunately, there are many people like Terri, and there are those who grow up on "SPED sleds" and those who create careers based
on these differences. And then there are geniuses who are so smart that they are deemed freaks. The questions posed by the degree of thought that individual human beings possess
are political, ethical and philosophical. At the same time, the physical world is often looked at as less valuable than the unseen existence. Some suggest that the spirit world is
a better place than this earthly life made up of flesh. Humans are not their bodies, and the body alone does not make a person. Yet, it is an
integral part of a person. People without functioning bodies--victims of accidents, victims of DES, those who suffer by natures cruelty--are nevertheless persons. Retarded people, people with Downs Syndrome and those
with very low I.Q.s are given every chance in this world to be full-fledged human begins. Vegetables, or those suffering in hospitals that cannot feed themselves for example, are also
given the same rights as other human begins, although that is arguable. Still, there is a sanctity of human life. People in horrible situations such as one that would deem
them a "vegetable" do have some thinking capacity perhaps. Yet, is a disembodied mind--their slow mind--really be who they are? Most would say "no." In some way, the human
body is more important to personhood than the mind because society tolerates all levels of intelligence. At the same time, there is an argument that suggests quite the opposite. In
