Rex, follows the Greek conception of tragedy, which is centered around the concepts that Aristotle describes as the "three unities." Aristotle wrote his Poetics about 50 years after the death
of Sophocles and was a great admirer of the great Greek playwright, considering his play Oedipus the King to be the perfect tragedy (McManus). Therefore Artistotles analysis of the structure
of tragedy is basically derived from Sophocles classic play. The following examination of Death of a Salesman demonstrates how Millers play follows the Greek template, making it an American tragedy
in the classic Greek tradition. The "rules" for tragedy formulated by Aristotle, which were based upon Sophocles Oedipus Rex, stipulate that the narrative should take place in one location,
just as Oedipus Rex takes place on the steps before the palace in Thebes. Similarly, Death of a Salesman takes place entirely within the Loman home in Brooklyn. However, just
as Sophocles expands the location of his play through references to the past and by introducing characters who describe action that took place elsewhere, likewise, Miller expands the setting by
taking the audience into Willy Lomans memories. Scenes from the past tell what life was like during Willys prime, as well as reflect his life on the road. According to
the Sophoclean template, time should also be compressed and restricted, with the action of the play taking no more than one day. But, here again, just as Sophocles had characters
relate past events, Miller has the Loman family recall the past, as well as offering the views of Willys memories, thereby, expanding the scope of the play to include decades,
just as Sophocles address the entire lifetime of Oedipus. The third "rule of unity" has to do with action, and stipulates that no action or scene should be a digression
