the American culture?a fact that has often been reflected in literature. Three American authors, Arthur Miller, Edward Albee, and Katherine Mansfield, are among those who have addressed the way that
American culture regards the process of aging. Each of these writers have shown through their work that the way that aging citizens are treated in this country provides the basis
for tragedy. In her short story "Miss Brill," Katherine Mansfield illustrates how the unthinking disrespect of youth can seriously undermine the confidence and outlook of an aging spinster. When
the story opens, the protagonist, Miss Brill, is preparing to go out for a Sunday afternoon in the park. She carefully puts on her fur piece?an article of clothing that
has obviously seen better days. Its aging?just as she is?but she feels very fond of it. Although Miss Brill obviously has little to bring her pleasure in her
life, no real ties?no mention of family, she is nevertheless thrilled to be going out into the world for a pleasant afternoon. Watching the people go by in the park,
she feels a connection with the society around her. She imagines that they are part of a play and she feels included?one of the "actresses" that make up the whole
of the Sunday scene. She is in this mood when a young couple sit down close to her. She imagines them to be the hero and heroine of the
"play," so she listens in on their conversation. The boy obviously wants the girl to commit to sexual involvement?an entanglement that the girl is resisting. The boy says:
"Because of that stupid old thing at the end there?" asked the boy. "Why does she come here at all?who wants her? Why doesnt she keep her silly old mug
