employees must follow the rules and it is a rather simple and recognizable system. Laissez Faire is basically a free reign ideology where employees make the rules. Perhaps a democratic style would fall in between these two very different models. In any event, in comparing and contrasting these two different approaches it pays to look at each one in detail. First, what is military style leadership? Military style leadership is first and foremost autocratic. Obviously, the military is autocratic--some call it the command and control management style (Fisher,1997)-- but one should not overlook the utilization of charisma in the military branches. Theories of charismatic leadership in organizations (Conger & Kanungo, 1987; House, 1977; Shamir, House, & Arthur, 1993 cited in Shamir, Zakay, Breinin and Popper, 1998) are applicable in addressing concerns in the military. Certainly chain of command, and the necessity of complicity, is related to charisma. Some new theories which have surfaced in this area are called "neocharismatic theories" (House, 1995 cited in Shamir et al, 1998). Studies guided by such theories have shown some support for hypothesized relationships between behaviors of charismatic leaders and various outcomes (1998). In some way, there could be no other way to run the military branches. There must be a precise pecking order, rules and regulations to follow and a rigid semblance of normalcy. After all, if war were to break out, organization is critical to handling inevitable actions and maneuvers. There is simply no time, and no place, to contemplate the feelings of the subordinates. While autocratic styles have gotten a bad name in recent years, they possess many positive attributes. One can see that in war time, such a structure will not work.
