the position of being the most used personal defense weapon in the military. The following paper examines the M16 and other personal defense weapons that are being developed, and in
some cases not used despite their apparent benefits over the M16. Military Technology and New Personal Defense Weaponry "Ever since the Armys adoption of the M16 in the
mid-1960s, a love-hate relationship has existed between combat troops and the weapon known as the black rifle" (Cox, 2007). It is touted as a gun that is easy to shoot,
is accurate, and is light enough to carry along with a great deal of ammunition, something that was not possible before its development (Cox, 2007). However, as would be expected,
and as is perhaps well known, it has many problems because of jamming, which requires constant cleaning, and the gas system which can create a condition of fouling (Cox, 2007).
In essence, it is a gun that needs constant attention. In most cases it appears as though the Army is replacing most
of the M16s with the M4 which is a newer carbine (Cox, 2007). "The Army started buying M4s in the mid-1990s but mainly reserved them for rapid-deployment combat units" (Cox,
2007). What makes this gun unique is the fact that it is collapsible and can thus be used in many different situations such as very tight urban combat and in
situations wherein the soldiers are in vehicles (Cox, 2007). At the same time, many are arguing that the M4 "is even less reliable than the M16" (Cox, 2007).
