of the most fascinating chapters of world history. It was a war in which brother took up arms against brother and a war in which some of the most
memorable military tactics of all time were employed. It was also a that was characterized by an extreme technological advantage on one side, the northern side. The other
side, the southern states that had chosen to recede from the Union, were characterized more by sheer determination of will than by the infrastructural and technological advantages that were at
the beck and call of the Union. The outcome of the war reflected this dichotomy. It was an outcome which was pretty much insured the moment that first
decisive bullet was fired and the war was initiated. There are numerous reasons behind the outcome of the Civil War. Each of
these relate, of course, to the relative strengths and weaknesses of the North and the South and indeed to integral differences of these regions of the country. The American
Civil War (1861-1865), pitted an agrarian society against an industrial society. The climate in the southern states was mild and afforded a long growing season in very fertile soils.
The northern winters were long and did not provide for an adequate growing season to provide the food stores necessary for the sustenance of an expanding population. The
North had a continual influx of foreign immigrants who were ready to work hard to establish themselves in their new country. These immigrants were receptive to new methods and
