Concentrating on recruitment posters, the author contends recruiting techniques evolved from the simplistic to the complex both in terms of the image rendition and in terms of the suggestion the images were intended to make to the American psyche. This paper emphasizes that the evolution in recruiting posters from simple to complex graphics, from informative to stunning, occurred both in relation to changing in printing and other technologies and in relation to cultural changes themselves. for example, recruiting posters were primarily text and information based. While they may have included simple black and white graphics, they were quite simplistic in comparison to the recruiting
posters which were to follow in history. Posters would evolve from the simplistic to the complex both in terms of the image rendition and in terms of the suggestion

representative recruiting poster from the Civil War we see a black on white format, a format with little in terms of graphics and much in terms of textual content.
Indeed, it can be contended that the text-based content of the posters which are illustrative of the Civil War can be related to the ideological complexities of that war.
Tearing the nation apart in the middle 1800s, this war is most often remembered as revolving around the issues of black slavery. In actuality, however, the Civil War actually
