up, changes were made. A student asks: "What were the major military policy issues facing American decision-makers after Vietnam and after the end of the Cold war? What choices were
made and why? Were these choices the best ones?" It seems that major military policy issues in respect to Vietnam would involve whether or not to put more funding into
the military, but greater than that, what would the next decades hold? During the sixties, the U.S. became involved in an issue it really had no business in, and lives
were lost. The Americans had a change of focus since that time. Many claim that America should not become involved in the affairs of others. In part, Vietnam was
fought due to cold war fears. There was the communist issue. America would flatten communist countries, but the rift between North and South Vietnam would not be easily ameliorated. To
some extent, the U.S. got in over its head. The soldiers were not prepared for what was to follow. Things would change in the way war was viewed after Vietnam
and policy changes would be made. In Frederick Kagans (2006) Finding the Target, the author talks mater of factly about the state of the U.S. military after Vietnam. The author
notes that there is currently a volunteer force, which is quite different from the draft in Vietnam (Kagan, 2006). This is an important point. The draft was something very unpopular
at the time. The stereotypical hippie would burn his draft card and flee to Canada. There were protests in the streets. In part, Vietnam was an unpopular war because of
the draft. At the same time, the present war in Iraq is becoming more and more unpopular as time goes on, and there is no draft. The absence of a
