A 6 page paper discussing the origins, value and uses of military protocol, using the “Yes Sir” response and the salute as examples. The end goal is to effect desired results with the greatest degree of physical safety possible, to enhance respect for the chain of command and to build greater self respect within those practicing military courtesy. Taken as a whole, military customs, courtesy and protocol provide a framework that becomes ingrained and automatic, providing a basis of behavior that retains a sense of control and organization when external conditions indicate that the reverse is true. Dr. James Dobson heads the Focus on the Family ministry based in Colorado Springs, home of the Air Force Academy. For winning parents over to his views on the
most effective methods of disciplining young children, he uses the example of the highway patrolman striving to enforce traffic laws. How does the
patrolman behave? S/he cannot be seen standing on a street corner whining at cars speeding past, "How many times have I told you not to do that? Slow
down!" S/he does not approach a driver in a rage or in any other state of lack of self control, but rather acts with extreme courtesy and speaks in
a normal tone of voice. S/he calmly approaches the driver with a "Good afternoon, sir. May I see your license and registration please?" S/he has made no
accusations and does not berate the driver; s/he maintains courtesy and matter-of-fact behavior that causes the driver to melt in his seat and regret his unfortunate decision to break the
law, but to respond to the patrolman with absolute respect and regard for his station. Military Courtesy Purpose The example that Dr. Dobson
uses is analogous to military customs and courtesy required of all members of the armed forces. Far from being little more than examples of behavior training and the more
powerful exerting their will on those with less power, as military custom can appear to be to those on the outside, there are several reasons that all branches of the
