action to regain control of the class. Framing the Problem Identification This is a behavior problem manifesting itself as a problem of classroom
management (Cummings, 2000). A new recruit fresh from boot camp has entered his classroom training phase and is causing disruptions in a military class. The student is only
17 years old and the instructor seems to believe that the new recruit needs careful handling. Criteria, Goals and Objectives The instructors goals
include bringing this recruit around to behaving in ways acceptable in a military setting by ensuring that the recruit receives treatment for the underlying problem(s), rather than for only the
outward symptoms. The instructors objective is to assist this student in gaining control of himself and his behavior. Effects of the Problem
One of the effects of the problem is that the students behavior is adversely affecting the entire class. Other students reward his behavior by laughing at the jokes that
the instructor finds obnoxious, encouraging the recruit to continue his inappropriate behavior. As the student has become increasingly problematic, the instructor has decreasing control of the class.
The larger effect of the problem is that the instructor is unable to cover all of the material he needs to teach to the class,
yet the entire class will be tested on the material it is expected to receive in the course. The end result will be lower test scores for everyone, which
