and conflicts. It has been more than six years since international military forces first began a relatively planned removal of the Taliban and of al-Qaeda insurgents and more than five
years since reconstruction plans have been in the workings. Although significant progress has been made, what still needs to be done to bring this country to a point of
self-sufficiency remains overwhelming. For example, according to a report from the United Nations, violence increased in 2006 in the "south, south-east and east of the country" (General Assembly Security Council,
2006). There were three to four times insurgency-caused deaths in those regions than in 2005 (General Assembly Security Council, 2006). Many incidents, perhaps most, were the result of anti-government actions
and also to an increase of Afghan National Army as well as an increase in international (General Assembly Security Council, 2006). Insurgents are intent on destroying the countrys new government.
The support and funding for the insurgent attacks seems to be coming from two primary places - outside the country and the drug trafficking operations (General Assembly Security Council,
2006). The out of country support seems to be centered in radical groups in Pakistan as well as Taliban-inspired Afghan refugees (General Assembly Security Council, 2006). Most of the actual
soldiers involved in these violent incidents are Afghans who are driven by abject poverty, a lack of education and an overall feeling of disenchantment about their own identity and their
own place in the society (General Assembly Security Council, 2006). This is a very important observation because it suggests the soldiers carrying out the violence are not driven by philosophy
