over completely and they still seem to be caught in that one terrible day, but others have managed to come to terms with the assault and move on. They
understand that while we may be attacked again, the threat should not be used as a pretext to abrogate civil liberties or monitor the activities of ordinary Americans simply because
they disagree with the current Administrations policies. Furthermore, we have been presented with a directive that says we must give up our freedoms in exchange for safety. This
is, I think, a false choice; there are other options for improving our safety besides taking away our liberty. In addition, I believe that perfect safety is an illusion
and doesnt exist anywhere. The best we can do is to take reasonable precautions to assure were not any less secure than we need be. The attack did underscore
one point, and that is the "porous" nature of our borders. It is easy to get into this country illegally (much easier than it is to get in legally,
which is one reason for the number of people trying to come in that way). But with the attack the issue shifted from illegal aliens coming in to look
for work, to the fear that terrorists could get in the same way. But investigation showed that the terrorists who flew the planes that morning were in the country
legally, which has led to calls for increasing security to deal with legal visitors as well as tackling the problem of illegals. The problem now facing us is two-fold:
identifying the most effective method of stopping terrorists at the border before they can even get into the country; and the best method for implementing whatever method we choose.
