the people they hear about on the news every day, and natural that they would wish to understand who these people are, and their motives. However, when people have a
great desire to learn such things they are often more than eager to find definitions that make them feel safe, and intelligent. Because of this need many people prefer to
look and read and learn from those who provide stereotypes, simple explanations, that can enable people to have almost superior attitudes. This brings us to Daniel Pipes work "Militant
Islam Reaches America." His work, while possessing numerous truths, is also a work that is essentially perpetuating stereotypes and a misunderstanding of a culture, allowing those who read and believe
his work to feel superior and thus perhaps safer. The following paper examines Pipes work and illustrates how it is a negative work that is not necessarily written objectively or
truthfully informatively. Militant Islam In first examining this work we look at the words of one individual who indicates how the United States media and publication world is
leading many Americans to think very poorly of all Muslims and of Islam. This individual states that, "We must not allow the enemies of Islam - religious extremists, intellectuals or
politicians - to use Sept.11 to plant in Western minds a distorted image of Islam and Muslims" (Tash ). This author also notes that there is a very powerful anti-Islam
