each other. A lacrosse player made a distasteful suggestion that the women use sex toys, to which one woman asked, "if the players penis was too small," and the man
suggested using a broom handle (Meadows and Evans 40). Offended, the women stopped the show and fled to the bathroom. Several players protested that they should get their money back
($800, paid in advance). Before the night was over Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans were accused of raping one of the women. By the time the rape
presumably occurred, one of the accused had already left the party Evans, the accused man whose home was the site of the incidence, was primarily concerned with appeasing the two
women and getting them to leave before the police were called for a noise violation. He slipped a $100 under the door of the bathroom to persuade them to leave.
The women called the men an obscene phrase and one man called back a racial epithet as they drove away (Meadows and Evans 40). When the three were accused, knowing
that they were innocent, they gave statement to the police and volunteered to take lie-detector tests (Meadows and Evans 40). To Durham County prosecutor Mike Nifong, who had political
ambitions, the case seemed like an ideal vehicle to become a hero to the African American community of Durham, North Carolina and get elected as the county district attorney. Initially,
Mike Nifong was portrayed by the media as a "modern-day Atticus Finch," the famous lawyer in Harper Lees famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird, who is the quintessential of legal
integrity (Coulter 6). Indeed, at first, it seemed there were similarities as Nifong presented himself as a "crusader against privilege and racism at an elite private university" (Bear "Sun" A06).
