about the larger political turmoil in the world that existed at the time. The physical setting in the work Red Midnight varies from scene to scene. There is the burning
village in the protagonists home town in Guatemala and then there is the angry sea. The emotional tone is also angry. A student writing on this subject should note that
the author makes a political statement and so the emotional tone sets the stage for deeper contemplation. In this account, the setting is volatile. The village burns. The
boat ride in the ocean is unsettling. At one point in the story, the ocean is very rough. However, Enrique remarks: " Maybe it is better to end your life
fast on the ocean than to die slowly from cholera, malaria, amoebas, and starvation" (Mikaelsen 48). In some way, this is a genuine comparison but it is also sarcastic. It
does seem to be a statement about the horrendous conditions that the characters left behind. What they are doing is something that is better than merely dying. At least, they
have some chance of survival. Still, the tone is angry and quite negative. A student writing on this subject ought to know that through most novels, there are changes within
the characters. Here, the main character or protagonist, is Santiago. At first, he is given a challenge and rises to it. He is on automatic pilot. However, as the
work unfolds, Santiago becomes exposed to the harsh realities of the universe. A student writing on this subject might suggest that Santiago learns that people all over the world are
not like the people in his village. This is a lesson for someone so young. Santiago is only twelve, but his sister is much younger and one can imagine that
