While knights were rapidly fading into the annals of history, the chivalric code by which they lived still characterized the Western society of Miguel de Cervantes. He questioned
these notions of heroism in what would truly become a novel for the ages, Don Quixote. Cervantes began writing his epic in 1605, and could have hardly imagined that
the novel would remain popular and a favorite topic of literary analysis well into the twenty-first century. Its primary characteristics, such as the use of satire to poke fun
at societys values (chivalry), the central conflict of how appearances can be deceiving when confused with reality, and the employment of irony (in the form of role reversal) are still
being used by contemporary authors and are responsible for the novels timeless appeal. The protagonist is a middle-aged bachelor named Alonso Quixano, who fills most of his lonely days reading
about the honorable exploits of his favorite knights. The na?ve Quixano does not realize he is reading works of fiction, and he seeks to live out his fantasies and
appoints himself protector of societys virtues (and of his idealized fair lady, Dulcinea), and chooses as his partner Sancho Panza, for all heroes had a faithful sidekick. Through the
inspired use of satire, Cervantes creates a character that reveals the ridiculousness of the chivalric code, while at the same time questions the validity of these outdated moral principles that
were still rigidly controlling a rapidly changing and increasingly sophisticated Western Europe. Many Spaniards of the seventeenth century were featuring a collective identity crisis much like Alonso Quixanos mid-life
