lives, they begin to think of death, realize that their children will soon grow up and leave them, and suddenly take inventory. What have they done with their lives? What
is left to do? While in past decades, reaching midlife was more of a crisis, even in the present, people have trouble admitting that they are not young anymore. Men
continue to have affairs with younger women and perhaps get that shiny red sports car. Women usually get face-lifts and tummy tucks which helps to shed light on gender
differences that persist into the twenty-first century. Yet, no matter what the stereotypes are, there are always those who do age gracefully. Some women hardly look their age. Few think
of Madonna as being middle age. A sex symbol of the latter part of the twentieth century, by the time she reaches forty she decides that motherhood is in the
cards after all. Without relying on men, she has two children and marries shortly thereafter only because she wants to. Times have changed. At the same time, even as life
expectancy has increased, people still grow wary as they grow older, regretting lost time and wondering if the future will be as good as the past. Will they be able
to enjoy their lives as the physical body ages, as society shows disrespect, and as they become more needy in terms of money and health care? Willis and Reid (1998)
take a look at middle age as editors of a volume that speaks volumes on this subject that has become in vogue since boomers began to turn 50. Although middle
