Manhattan. There is much history in New York City in respect to immigration. People came from different parts of the world. When focusing on Middle Eastern immigration, those who arrived
early on came between 1875 and 1912 (Smith, 2008). The first immigrants from the Middle East would come from Syria, Jordan, Israel, the Palestinian Authority and present day Lebanon
(Smith, 2008). Many were Christian, but some of the immigrant were Muslim (Smith, 2008). Many would come to the states for the short term for the purpose of earning money
(Smith, 2008). Others had been running away from political turmoil, such as those who came from Turkey (Smith, 2008). When these Middle Eastern immigrants arrived, many settled in the east,
but some went to the mid-West and even to the other coast (Smith, 2008). Soon afterwards, there had been another wave of immigration. The third documented period of immigration form
the Middle East took place between 1947 and 1960, but this time there were many more Muslims entering the United States (Smith, 2008). During the earlier waves of immigration the
Muslims would move to rural areas in addition to urban areas (Smith, 2008). There was variety in terms of where they settled. Yet, this latter time of immigration saw more
immigrants from urban backgrounds which mean that the cities would swell (Smith, 2008). Cities like New York and Chicago would see the arrival of these immigrants (Smith, 2008). Soon, Islam
