exists almost everywhere in the nation and varies in degrees of intensity. It also clearly exists in the workplace, although it is not necessarily something people recognize or talk about. One company that has seen its share of problems regarding racism is Microsoft. The following paper examines racism at this company starting from a foundation of hiring as seen in William Poundstones book How Would You Move Mount Fuji? Microsofts Cult of the Puzzle - How the Worlds Smartest Company Selects the Most Creative Thinkers. Microsoft and Racism In first establishing the foundation of the research into racism and Microsoft it is noted that in the study of IQs and IQ testing it has been held in the past that such tests and results clearly indicate that the African Americans are not as intelligent as other races, primarily white people. Poundstone notes, specifically, how one individual, a leader in such testing in the 60s, noted "differences in group IQ scores proved that African Americans and other minorities were intellectually inferior to whites. This was not a new idea" (33). This man, and others, have clearly established a sort of foundation in the nation as it involves employment and the assumed intelligence and ability of races that are not white. It indicates that the nation is geared towards white people and the way they may think, thus eliminating, however subtly or subversively or naively, the African American. This is essentially much of the premise one could argue is behind the racism at Microsoft, especially when discussing their testing/employment pursuits. It is likely the basis, however blindly, for racism in the company.
