Zune cannot exist alone, of course, and the Zune name also is the product brand name for the player, its software and the Microsoft site that offers music, movies and other video for download and playback on its Zune player. Given Apples strong lead in MP3 players, Microsofts entry into the market showed great promise. Sales grew through 2007, but the company failed to upgrade 2007 releases and in 2008 sales declined by 54 percent. Microsoft seems ambivalent toward the product, though Zune devotees continue to show great enthusiasm for the products. History of Past Strategies and Performance Zune runs on Microsoft platforms and currently is not compatible with iPod products or software. It can be synced with a PC and offers programs similar to iPods. As example, the Zune download site offers temporary unlimited downloads though it permits users to keep only ten a month. Digital rights management techniques remove the ability of users to keep all of the downloads they may want to preserve, but there seems to be little complaint about that among current customers. The Zune made a reasonable showing against iPod upon its release, selling in the number two position and gaining about 9 percent of the market, compared to Apples 63 percent (Block, 2006).
