2007 and network-connected workers will find that the various versions of the new upgrade provide more considerably more tools than previous versions.2 Nevertheless, the dramatic design changes in this new
version of Office can be a bit startling for longtime users. Rather than depending a multitude of pull-down text menus and thin taskbars, the new version of Office provides
a band or "ribbon" of action icons that appears where the taskbars used to be and this ribbon changes graphically as the user clicks on menu-bar tabs.3 While users will
probably have to hunt to locate familiar features, the new ribbon interface exposes users to tools and options that they may not have known existed. Furthermore, it supports a practical
new feature entitled "live preview."4 To access this option, the uses should select all or a portion of a document and then locate the mouse over a formatting option, such
as a new font. This action will change the documents appearance, allowing the user to preview the effect. If the user likes the effect, clicking will instigate the change.
As this suggests, Microsoft Office 2007 can be viewed as either changing everything or it can be viewed as everything remaining basically the same, as the controls that users learned
