even a man who decides it is he who must fight the Spanish Inquisition. It was in fact, Ginzburgs The Cheese and the Worms: The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller
that brought microhistory to the forefront in terms of historical studies although this approach was initiated by others who began to study individual community events to explain larger concepts (Brown
2003). Ginzburg analyzed "exceptional-normal historical episodes in modern Italy" (Brown 2003, 1), which is what popularized the approach. The microhistory approach also received credence from Davis The Return of
Martin Guerre (Brown 2003). These early microhistorians, who emphasized the happenings during the Inquisition, gave a voice to those who would otherwise gone unknown (Brown 2003). Giznburgs The Cheese
and the Worms: The Cosmos of a Sixteenth-Century Miller, tells the tale of a miller named Menocchio who was a self-educated man and who fell victim to the Inquisitors in
1584. Menocchio declared: "in my opinion, all was chaos... and out of that bulk a mass formed - just as cheese is made out of milk - and worms appeared
in it, . . . . , there was also God, he too having been created out of that mass at the same time" (Ginzburg 1983, 53). For this declaration,
