Microeconomic concepts apply to both the company discussed here, Wilkerson Smokers, and the market segment that purchases its products. Within the company, there are choices of how much product
to produce; how much labor to use in production; how to managed fixed and variable costs associated with production; and how to alter production costs so that each of the
two products the company makes can provide a greater profit contribution without raising prices charged to retailers. Sales are seasonal, and the company
spreads production over the entire year so that it can hold down labor costs over the course of the year. It does not run double shifts or pay a
great deal of overtime labor in the time immediately preceding retailers busy sales season for grills and smokers. Neither does the company actively
market its products to end users. It has been seeking to gain the attention of one or more large retailers (i.e., Wal-Mart) but has been unsuccessful in that attempt
to date. With greater demand for its products, it would be selling more units in the short term and also may be more successful in gaining the attention of
a large retailer. Introduction Wilkerson Smokers is a two-location manufacturer of barbecue smokers. Similar to grills in that they do cook food
and use an open fire, the grills are constructed to provide the greatest exposure to wood smoke possible, delivering at the same time an infusion of flavor not possible with
standard barbecue grills. Large and awkward, the grills are not things of beauty, but they do sell well to fans of smoked barbecue.
