briefly describing the book and the steps Posner and Kouzes describe as intrinsic to leadership. The five steps or "practices" as theyre more often called are as follows: 1. Model
the way; 2. Inspire a "shared vision"; 3. Challenge the process; 4. "Enable others to act"; and 5. "Encourage the heart" (Kouzes and Posner, 3-26). When a leader models the
way he or she doesnt simply talk about the way they believe things should be done, they lead by example. If they expect their employees to work longer hours, they
work longer hours; if they think people should take time off, they take time off. They set the tone of the entire operation by showing their employees what needs to
be done. Theres nothing worse or more ineffective than a boss who says something like "You all need to step it up a notch" and then takes the afternoon off
to play golf. A good leader inspires a shared vision, meaning that everyone in the organization shares the same goals and is working towards achieving those goals. Kouzes and Posner
put it much better: "When people described to us their personal-best leadership experiences, they told of times when they imagined an exciting, highly attractive future for their organization. They had
visions and dreams of what could be. They had absolute and total personal belief in those dreams, and they were confident in their abilities to make extraordinary things happen" (2007,
