obviously only part of the nineteen-foot form now
residing in the Academia. An analysis of the
piece including descriptive, interpretative and

If were really able to look the statue in the eye as this photographer has done, we would have to be almost three times our normal height.
The figure becomes even more impressive, when you think of it being carved from a single piece of stone. If the final figure is 19 feet tall, we might
guess that the 33 ton block of white marble (http:/ / www.artistic-spirit.com/ sculpture/ info-cv004.htm) would have been any where from twenty to twenty five feet tall. Analysis Descriptive: This
detail has been chosen to give the viewer an idea of the naturalness of the form. If you notice, even from this smaller view, the shoulders are slightly sloped,
indicating that the weight of the figure rests more on one foot than the other. See how the remainder, of the hand curves naturally, as just the fingers hold
on to the cloak? The temptation for a visual artist is to hide the ears, giving just a suggestion of the form. Here Michelangelo goes for the whole structure,
even knowing that it would not be seen that well from the ground, the vantage point of most viewers of his time. The curls of the hair stand out
in a singular manner also. Interpretive: The "feel" of this whole work is one of resting power. The artist has captured the image of man at his prime.
