works that often take second place to the Sistine Chapel. He worked with one particular family, the Medici family, for a number of years. They were his patrons and paid
him to create many different pieces, including architectural structures such as tombs. In the following paper we examine the relationship that Michelangelo had with the Medici family. In presenting a
general overview of this relationship and the work that Michelangelo created for them, we begin with a brief biography, which allows us to put the relationship in perspective. The paper
then turns to discussing the relationship between the two, examining such works as the Medici chapels and the tombs of the Medici. Michelangelo: A Biography Michelangelo was born in
1475 and died in 1564. His father was a "Florentine official which gave Michelangelo a lot of opportunities early in life that he would not have had otherwise. Because of
their connections with the ruling family, the Medici, Michelangelo got to go work in the workshop of the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio when he was thirteen years old" (Anonymous Michelangelo, 2001;
michaelo.htm). It was during this particular stint that he learned much about the trade of painting. However, Michelangelo only stayed there for two years," leaving "because he received a great
opportunity to go study sculpture at the sculpture school in the Medici gardens. Right after Michelangelo started there, he was invited to move into the house of Lorenzo de Medici"
