due to cocaine trafficking. Santos, through anecdotes and vivid description, offers insight into what prison life is like from the perspective of an inmate. These stories are frequently shocking, as
they portray existence that is brutal, violent, and dehumanizing. The main theme that underscores these narratives is the fact that there is little, if anything, which is rehabilitative in the
overcrowded and impersonal US correctional system. For example, Santos discusses the case of Robert, a young African American who has chosen drug trafficking as his profession, which is a
profession that he plans to return to after serving his four-year-sentence. For Robert, there is no negative stigma for having been in prison, as having served a prison term would
only serve to substantiate his credibility on the street, thus, enabling him to broad the scope of his criminal involvement (Santos 15). In other words, Ronald viewed his time in
prison as a professional obligation. Brutal fights between prisoners, as well as stabbings, are regular occurrences, as are rapes, as tensions build easily in overcrowded, overheated cellblocks. Ronald related
to Santos that prior to his arrest, several of the guards were his regular customers for illicit drugs and he claimed that several of the female guards gained additional income
by working as prostitutes within the jail (Santos 17). However, horrible conditions and high violence are not indicative of all jails. At the Kent City Jail, which is where
Santos is held for the first few months of confinement, there were no violent incidents of which he was aware. At this facility, there were no community showers, no horseplay
was tolerated, and a merit=housing system inspired prisoners to focus on the incentives offered as a means of improving their lives (Santos 18). However, this facility appears to be the
